If you have spent any time researching marketing, you have probably heard someone say SEO is dead. It usually comes right before they try to sell you something else.
The short answer is no. SEO is not dead. It is changing (as it always has!), and the version where you pick one keyword and chase the number one spot on Google is fading.
People still search every day for businesses like yours. Google still pulls its answers from websites, and so do AI tools. What has changed is how people find you and how much your website has to prove before they reach out.
Why Do People Keep Saying SEO Is Dead?
Because it happens every few years. Something changes in search, the old tricks stop working. Keyword stuffing went first. Then thin blog posts written just to hit a word count. Now it is AI answers sitting at the top of Google.
Three things are fueling it right now:
- Fewer clicks on some searches. AI summaries answer quick questions right on the results page.
- More places to search. People look for answers on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and AI tools like ChatGPT.
- A lot of weak content. Businesses publish generic AI-written blogs, get nothing back, and blame SEO.

What Has Actually Changed in Search?
Let’s start with clicks. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 adults in the US. People clicked a regular search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when there was no summary. They clicked the links inside the summary itself in only 1% of visits.
That data is from March 2025, and it shows the two things move together, not that one causes the other. Still, it is a real shift.
Two other changes matter just as much.
Searches are getting longer and more specific. “SEO agency Vancouver” is now “best SEO agency for a small law firm in Vancouver.” A vague page loses to a specific one.
Search is not just Google anymore. Your customer might find you on Google, in a YouTube video, through an Instagram search, or inside an AI answer. We break this down in how social media became a search engine and where search is going in the next five years.
This is the part that matters most for your business. In our work with service businesses and ecommerce brands, searches with a decision attached (someone choosing who to hire or buy from) still send people to websites. The questions like “what is a marketing strategy” are the ones AI is absorbing.
Does SEO Still Work With AI Search?
Yes, and Google says so itself. Its documentation says you can apply the same foundational SEO practices to its AI features that you use for regular Search. Its guide to generative AI features goes further. Those features are built on Google’s core ranking and quality systems, so SEO best practices still apply, and the advice centers on unique content instead of a copy of what is already out there.
So, AI does not remove keywords. Your content still needs to match the words people type (or say) into search, and it still needs to come from a business that clearly knows its topic.
One thing, that guidance is about Google. ChatGPT and other tools do not publish rules like it, so treat the fundamentals as your best bet, not a promise. If you want the AEO and GEO side, we get into how AI is changing SEO and what to do about it.
One more useful thing: Google Search Console now has reports on generative AI visibility, rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. Go check whether your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode show up there.
Is SEO Still Worth It for Small Businesses?
When SEO Is Worth Investing In
- People already search for what you sell. If customers type “family lawyer near me” or “med spa in Vancouver,” there is demand to catch.
- Your customers take their time. Lawyers, accountants, contractors, and clinics get researched and compared before anyone picks up the phone.
- You want leads that do not vanish when you stop posting or paying.
- Your website can actually convert. Clear service pages, real proof, and an obvious next step.
When SEO Should Not Be Your First Move
- Nobody searches for what you offer yet. A brand-new category needs awareness first, through referrals, social, or ads.
- You need customers this month. SEO usually takes months, so ads are the faster lever.
- Your site is not ready. If it is slow, confusing, or hard to contact, fix that first. A simple SEO audit shows where you stand.
Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings or traffic. If someone does, walk away.
SEO vs. Paid Ads vs. Social Media
These are not rivals. They do different jobs, and none of them is better than the others.
- SEO is slow to start and builds over time. You do not pay per click, but the work never really stops.
- Paid ads put you in front of buyers fast and stop the second the budget does. That is what our Google Ads management is built around.
- Social media builds awareness and trust, but the leads often depend on your posting schedule. When life gets busy and you stop posting, the leads dry up.
Most small businesses do best pairing SEO with one paid channel. Ads show you which keywords turn into customers, and SEO builds long-term visibility around them.
What Does Modern SEO Look Like?
Modern SEO is about being clear, specific, and easy to trust. In practice, that looks like this:
- Service pages that answer real questions. Who it is for, what is included, and what happens next. Our guide to what website content you actually need covers the basics.
- Topics, not just keywords. Cover your niche in depth so search engines and AI tools treat you as a real source. Our free keyword course is a good place to start.
- Proof. Reviews, case studies, named authors, and a real About page.
- Technical basics. A site that is fast, crawlable, and easy to use.
- Local visibility. If you serve a local area, your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website.
- Your own experience in the content. Google’s helpful content guidance asks for people-first content that shows first-hand expertise. Generic AI posts do not.
- Tracking beyond clicks. Calls, form fills, and impressions tell you more than visits alone.
If you want the strategy without doing all of it yourself, that is what our SEO and content strategy service is for.
How Do You Choose an SEO Marketing Agency in Canada?
Picking an SEO marketing agency can feel like guessing, so here is a simple gut check. Ask yourself: Did they ask about my customers before they talked about tactics? If the answer is no, that tells you a lot.
Good signs:
- They explain what they will do in plain English.
- They report on leads and results, not only rankings.
- They tell you when SEO is not the right fit yet.
Red flags:
- Guaranteed rankings or page-one promises.
- Vague deliverables and reports full of jargon.
- “AI SEO” sold as a secret you cannot get anywhere else.
- A long contract pushed before they have even looked at your site.
A solid agency usually handles an audit, keyword research, content planning, technical fixes, link building, and monthly reporting. You can see how we do it on our SEO services page and read real results in our case studies.
So, Is SEO Dead?
No. Lazy SEO is dead. Picking one keyword, publishing filler, and crossing your fingers does not work anymore.
But showing up when someone searches for what you offer is still one of the smartest things a small business can do, whether that happens on Google, YouTube, or inside an AI answer. The question is not whether SEO is dead. It is whether yours matches how people search now.

FAQs
Is SEO Dead in 2026?
No. SEO has changed, but people still search every day to find products and services, and AI tools still draw on website content. The work has moved from chasing one ranking to being clear, specific, and trustworthy in more places.
Is SEO Still Worth It for Small Businesses?
Often, yes, especially if your customers search for what you offer and take time to decide. It is a poor first move if nobody searches for your offer yet, you need customers right away, or your website is not ready to turn visitors into inquiries.
Does SEO Still Work With AI Search?
Yes. Google’s documentation says the same core SEO practices apply to its AI features, which run on its core ranking and quality systems. Other AI tools do not publish equivalent rules, so treat the fundamentals as a strong bet, not a guarantee.
Will AI Replace SEO?
Unlikely. AI changes how answers get delivered, but those answers still come from websites. What is getting replaced is low-value SEO work, like generic content written only to rank.
What Is Replacing SEO?
Nothing has replaced it. AEO and GEO are newer labels for parts of the same job: making your business easy to find and easy to understand, whether the answer shows up in Google, on social, or in an AI tool. The fundamentals are still the foundation.
How Long Does SEO Take to Work?
In our experience, some businesses see early movement within a few weeks, while more competitive industries can take around 3 months or longer. It depends on competition, your site’s history, and how much work gets done. Anyone promising fast, guaranteed rankings is a red flag. Here is how small businesses start ranking on Google.
What Does an SEO Marketing Agency Actually Do?
Usually an audit, keyword research, content planning, technical fixes, link building, and regular reporting tied to leads and goals.
