If you’re like many small business owners, you know that understanding SEO can feel exhausting. But what if I told you that you could start not just understanding but also using this knowledge to steal your competitors traffic?
In my latest webinar, “How to Steal Your Competitors’ Traffic,” we went into the tactics that can help you steal the keywords that are working well for your competitor and use them in your own strategy.
Understanding Who Your Competitors Really Are
First things first, let’s redefine “competitor.” Forget the business down the street; your real competitors are the ones already winning on Google. Make sure your list is between 3 to 5 competitors and mix it up between local competitors, large competitors, and industry leaders.Â
The Tools
To spy on your competitors effectively, you need the right tools. We discussed a few favorites during the webinar:
- SpyFu: Great for digging into the specifics of what your competitors are up to with their SEO and paid ads.
- UberSuggest: Offers a robust free plan that helps you identify similar websites and explore keywords that are working for them.
- Google Search: Sometimes, it’s as simple as seeing who ranks where for which terms directly through Google.
Steal Wisely: Keywords and Content Strategies
Once you’ve identified who you’re really up against, it’s time to start borrowing intelligently. This doesn’t mean copying their content but rather understanding what keywords they are successfully ranking for and how their content strategy is structured.
Are they using specific types of articles, tools, or case studies that you aren’t? How can you take similar concepts and make them even better or more relevant for your audience?
Implement and Optimize
Here’s the fun part: taking what you’ve learned and making it your own. Adjust your website’s metadata, tweak your service descriptions, and ensure your blogs are not just SEO-friendly but also richer and more engaging than your competitors’. Every piece of content should be an opportunity to outdo the competition not just in SEO terms but in value delivered to your potential customers.
