Google, of course, isn’t giving away its search traffic without a fight. With its new AI-powered search mode built into its browser, Google is trying to stay the primary gateway. But for small businesses this means that 

We are also seeing a drastic increase in what we call zero click searches. Informational keywords are no longer bringing traffic to your website because the AI overview can answer the questions in an often more succinct way. Those general clicks were always really good for improving SEO. That doesn’t mean SEO is dead but it means you have to focus more on increasing transactional or conversion based clicks and your site needs to say more than a simple AI call out to really get those clicks. 

From Ranking Links to Being the Source

The old SEO playbook was pretty straight forward: optimize your content, rank high in Google, and capture clicks. The new GEO (Generative engine optimization) playbook? 

Make your content authoritative enough to be the source AI engines trust.

That means:

  • Creating structured content (FAQs, how-to guides, clear answers).
  • Building credibility through backlinks, mentions, and consistent messaging.
  • Sharing insights that position your business as the expert in your niche.

Think of it less as chasing the number one spot on Google and more as building a content ecosystem. If AI assistants, search engines, or even social tools need to pull an answer you want them to see your site as the authority.

Social Media as the New Search Engine

Younger generations are searching differently, too. Nearly 40% of Gen Z say they use TikTok or Instagram instead of Google when looking for a place to eat, shop, or learn something new.

That means video content and being visible on social media is just as important as it once was to be on Google. YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram reels are shaping the way customers find answers just as much as search engines.

The future of SEO must also include social discovery optimization. You need to be visible on these platforms. That doesn’t mean go all in but, it does mean having a few posts, keeping them up to date, and making sure you grab your company name at a minimum. 

Social media will not be something we can ignore in 2026 and now that all social platforms also get pulled by search engines it should be a part of your overall search strategy. 

But How Will You Get Recommended?

If someone searches for “best bakery near me,” Google shows a mix of ads and organic results giving local shops a chance to grab attention through paid and organic opportunities.

But in an AI-first world, that customer may never see a list of bakeries or ads at all. Instead, their assistant could simply say: “The top-rated bakery nearby is Sweet Crumbs on Main Street. Would you like me to order cupcakes for pickup?”

That single recommendation means only one business wins visibility.

While this is not how search currently works, speaking to Siri has become common and Siri simply can’t give you a list of the “Top 10 bakeries” in your area; it would be too overwhelming to hear out loud. 

That’s where local search will start to make a bigger impact. Based on your physical location (yes I believe even for service based businesses) you will be recommended on proximity and recommendations to reviews. Your AI assistant will give you 1 to 3 bakeries in your area and likely summarize distance, traffic, and general reviews allowing you to make the final decision. 

So how do you become the one business the AI engine trusts enough to suggest? 

  • Making sure your content is structured and clear, so AI can easily pull from it.
  • Building reputation signals like reviews, testimonials, and consistent branding.
  • Make sure all your platforms are talking about the same products and services (consistency through your marketing)
  • Ensuring your business shows up in multiple places like Google, social media, and trusted directories.

Your visibility will depend on your authority and the clarity you showcase in your content. 

How Entrepreneurs Can Prepare Right Now

It’s important to note that less than 10% of traffic is currently coming from AI traffic. But, that is increasing exponentially every year 

Here are a few steps you can take now to prep:

  • Use structured content: Create clear answers, FAQs, and guides that AI engines can easily reference.
  • Build brand authority: Seek mentions, partnerships, and backlinks that boost credibility.
  • Invest in video: Short-form and long-form video help you show up in social media search and recommendation engines.
  • Be multi-platform visible: Don’t rely only on Google optimize for AI, social, and niche discovery tools.
